EXORCIST FROM MADRID DISCUSSES OCCULT, DEMONS,

    LINKS CLERGY CRISES TO BUREAUCRACY

    By Michael H. Brown

Among other things that we discuss at our retreats is the issue of angels and demons. The other night, I spoke with Father José Antonio Fortea Cucurull, a well-known exorcist from the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares in Spain (Madrid). His thesis for a degree from the Camillas Pontifical University was entitled Exorcism in the Present Age. He is also the subject of a book, Interview with an Exorcist. And so he is a man to whom one can direct certain questions.

How often does full possession by demons occur? Who gets possessed? How active -- in our present time, in his opinion -- is evil?

While, from time to time, demonic influence makes its attempt on us all (and while the Church is not currently well-schooled in this aspect, which was such a part of Jesus' ministry; see today's Gospel reading), Father Fortea, in answering the first question, said that there are only about four cases of total possession, whereby a demon has complete control of a body, per year in Spain (this in a nation of forty-five million). "We are speaking of something that is rare," the priest said. Like other exorcists, however, the Spanish priest differentiates between possession and influence or affliction by unclean entities (the latter far more frequent) and is quick to point out that there may be cases of possession itself that never come to his attention. Indeed, Father Fortea, pastor of Saint Mary Magdalene Parish in Anchuelo, on average sees five to ten people who come to see him each day in the belief they are being affected (call this oppression or infestation).

When it is a case of total possession (and not a psychological sickness), the exorcist says the origin is often in the occult -- and that while Europe is far more secularized than the U.S., America has at least equal problems with the demonic because the very belief in the supernatural here (missing in so much of Europe) often leads people into cultism, mediumship, satanism, esoteric science, paganism, pantheism, wizardry, or the New Age, however we label it: the wrong kind of supernatural experience. In other words, the interest in spiritual matters is often diverted to dark regions.

"It's clear that the more people go to witchcraft, the more there will be cases of demonism," says Father Fortea. "It takes a certain level of action. There were less cases in Europe forty years ago. In the Americas, you have such things as Santería [an occult practice especially prevalent in the Miami area]. The great difference between Europe and here is that South America and North America have more faith. Europe is more secularized, and there is a demonical influence -- but in the Americas even good people show a tendency to go to psychic or witches."

"That for the moment is the main difference. I can't say there are more cases of exorcism, but to put the hands through the barrier from this world to the other is something that happens more in this country: there is a clear presence of the occult. Yet you also have more Christianity. Because of their faith, Americans pray more. So I do not say that here you have more cases. I really don't know. Each country has its defects."

One of the most extreme cases the priest has encountered concerned a woman whose deliverance lasted nine years. "She is now normal," recalled Father Fortea last week, during a visit to the U.S. "It was very dramatic because of the screaming. I did not know it was even possible to scream in such a way. There were even some movements of the bed: impossible for a person."

    And the cause?

"I can tell you what the demons said. They said it was witchcraft and a cult. But I'm not sure. Demons deceive. There are more cases of demonical influence -- pain, trance, but the demon can't move the body with freedom-- maybe a tremble. Demonical influences are more common. Many times very, very light."

    But, yes, sometimes extreme.

Healings have occurred in conjunction with deliverance and exorcism, says Father Fortea -- noting the "grave case" of a man who had a large tumor in his liver that after exorcism disappeared. "It's a shame we don't use healing power more," said the exorcist, who had recently spoken to priests in the Diocese of St. Augustine in Florida and was on to Albuquerque, where we caught up with him. His approach is first to bless a person to see if there is possession. He has invoked saints like Saint George. "Usually I pray in tongues, and really it works," he says. "Demons know what you are saying."

Father Fortea has been called to deliver homes that seemed infested by spirits and recommends frequent praying of the Rosary and use of Holy Water in such instances. Purging a building can take time. "In one case even the bishop went there and it took a while," he said. It often takes persistence (see James 4:7). One subject rarely addressed by the Church concerns spirits of the deceased and whether they can negatively affect the living. Father Fortea described this as a "very mysterious" topic and said there are "different opinions among exorcists." He preferred not to address it in detail, saying it was a subject that can cause fear, and fear is destructive. There can be a link between abortion and demonism, but he is reluctant to discuss this also ("The abortion itself," he says, "is already a terrible tragedy for the woman").

In his mid-forties, Father Fortea says that he does not have a special sensitivity to the presence of evil. His approach is more intellectual. Asked about claims of apparitions, particularly the Blessed Mother, at places such as Medjugorje in Hercegovina, which has divided at least two European exorcists, Father Fortea said that currently "I suspend judgment." He does ardently defend the controversial writings of Italian mystic Maria Valtorta, who wrote Poem of the Man-God, and said he was informed in Rome that she is up for beatification. "People who have attacked her may have a big surprise," he claims. "Her cause was accepted in the Congregation of Saints."

Let us continue to discern. There are so many mysteries! For example, how about the clergy abuse crisis -- particularly in countries such as the U.S.? "Priests in this country are very good -- so why so many cases of abuse?" he responds. "In Spain we have very few cases. I don't know why. Priests are spending too much time with paper in offices and this is a big danger-- bureaucracy. Office work is not pastoral work. To be in front of a computer is not pastoral. They have to return to the simplicity. They should create a commission to study priests in Italy, Spain, and even the Orthodox in Greece on how to function as poor and simple. In Spain, it's unthinkable to close a church because in Spain it is very inexpensive to operate one; in fact, we are opening churches in our diocese; but the more you grow a bureaucracy, the more it eats you; the more you bury yourself in an office, the more you are going away from the ministry of Jesus."

The good news: the number of exorcists in the U.S. is increasing, he noted. "Ten years ago, there were no more than thirty or forty dioceses that had an official exorcist in the U.S. and now it may be double." The bad news: many dioceses remain without one.

It is a simple call to act in the unworldly, non-bureaucratic way of Christ.

When we do, we see healing. We see deliverance. We see freedom from fear, depression, obsession, oppression, even possession (hear the hiss) as well as fear.

It takes close attention to Scripture -- which itself has great power over evil.

If one could watch the ministry of exorcism, says Father Fortea, one would see that "the pages of the Gospel are completely alive in our time."

    Peace be with you always

In the dictations to Maria Valtorta, which Jesus spoke! He identifies and discusses many reasons for demon possession. He even says, those who go against, God and civil morals, upright living, 'are possessed' themselves.

One tree God gave, Tree of Life, the second Tree the Knowledge of Good and Evil, snuck in thus, this tree is depicted by 'Serpent.' Serpents sneak around, snake, remember the many acronyms for 'you are a snake.' Enough said.

He goes on to say, that the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, which we are all born from, read Genesis first 5 Chapters and then read the 6 Chapter and the Lineage of sons of God, I won't explain the depths thereof, because I would have to pull the pages from PoMG and the Notebooks a long set of pages, some 12,000 pages.

I will in fact say a few words. Adam and Eve were, Created by God. If they remained in Grace, we would all be born of God and woman like Jesus. Jesus was the example of what God wanted for man. The 'Example' in every thing from Birth to Ascension, minus the death and resurrection. Remove the death part. He died for us because Man sinned. And a Redeemer was necessary to bring man back to peace with God. But not all men accept God's peace offering.

Just imagine if man did not sin! Imagine, meditate, contemplate. Now look at Jesus being born, Jesus Ascending.

Jesus life teaching God's Laws, and to love one another. Focus on these parts. Remove all the evil ways of man persecuting Him. Just think of all those souls, as God's children, all good and listening with brotherly love to the Divine Word.

The ability to see what it would have been like, is shown in Poem of the Man-God and in the Notebooks. Then, one by one, Jesus teaches what is the reality of man fallen. It is an horrible thing, misery, death, pain, suffering. This is not what God had in mind for man. Free will to choose. God advised Adam and Eve, Cain, and many others, but they brushed aside God's kind advice for their own lust for knowledge. Free will.

Created perfect doesn't mean they were perfect in responding. The element of the soul, the free being to make a choice, to seek after more knowledge to become like God as in wanting to Be another God. There is a defining here that we do not understand well enough because the Priests do not understand it at all. They do not meditate long and hard.

To be like God from God's perspective to us ants, is to have His Likeness in character, in personality, in behavior. How we act, think and participate. To reason like God reasons, out of love and good will, only what is good issuing from our hearts, the inspiration of our hearts to love and do good.

God already gave to us the initial imprint, thus stated, in Genesis first two chapters.

Let us make man in our image and likeness. So he gave to us the 'mold' to start from. A mold, thus created perfect in form and shape, and even intelligence and free will. Everything internal and external as far as a 'being' is concerned. But to live, is another thing. This is the free will. To choose to "act and be."

So God is telling us, over and over, to 'Be Like Him' In acting and behaving. Personality and Character. What is God? Love. Only Love a Good for all. To have God as the model to imitate and seek after, to form us in perfect Love. God gave to man, the initial seed of love, which He planted in Adam and Eve. To grow this seed into a large beautiful fruitful love tree. Only love.

    Thus, possession goes like this.

If you imitate Satan, you are possessed by Satan.

If you imitate God, you are possessed by God.

There are no others to imitate.

If you imitate an evil habit and gesture, you imitate Satan.

If you imitate an good habit and gesture, you imitate God who is All Good.

Peace to men of 'good will.'

What happened to man at the Garden? Man converted-transformed into a fallen man --disgraced--, from a living soul. The Light Departed, the Fire Departed, the Wisdom departed, God is a Living Spirit. His Soul is that of God, which He gave from to man, thus He breathed into the nostrils of flesh made from mud and it became a living soul. Not a living man or flesh. A demigod, what God created, was a royal son,--Adam says about woman, flesh of my flesh, bone of my bones--, --what God says about Jesus, Begotten Not Made--, what Adam says about being God's son, created not born--soul of God's Soul, spirit of God's Spirit--, I am created by my Father, God, who gave me His breathe, and made me a living soul, according to His Image and Likeness, that of Spirit. The flesh is an extra delight. The flesh is animated by the fact of God's Breathe, even in our current fallen state. But we do not have Grace preside over the procreation by creating the fetus. Man and woman together when they mate, help form the fetus by their donation. Then God infuses the spirit and that's when the flesh of the fetus animates. Without the soul, the fetus does not animate. It does not live as flesh, thus the donation is of no use. But, if God had presided in the procreation, all would live. For the Holy Spirit would create the fetus, taking the flesh parts what is needed to make a new flesh in the womb from the woman and God would infuse His breathe into the womb. Thus, all would say what Jesus said: Begotten not made. For, everyone would be born in Grace. Since Adam and Eve, decided to be gods of this process, we are born of man's flesh and woman's flesh, both. So, we have a mixture of input from two instead of God. Sin created the imperfections in man we witness to. Deformed. God created perfection of body and soul, will and intelligence. We are born with many deficiencies we do not even know of. But, God describes them to us, in Poem of the Man-God and the Notebooks.

I see the whole process of. My lack of proper words, may steer you in the wrong way.

But, only God can actually through the Holy Spirit reveal this to you. Thus, an internal apparition, and locution to explain to your intellect in some fashion. We receive visions from God about the truths, similar to the Prophets, --in this case not about the future of man but about God's creation,--about the Holy Truths, about the Word of God. About whatever God wants you to understand and know.

You must be absoluty convinced of God and His Truth, His Word. God only knows if you are, I did not recognize nor realize till later on that I believed in His Word. I felt, less than capable, not worthy, A worm. I still feel that way, humiliation. God loves, humble people, because they feel worthless before God, who is All Powerful, All Good, All Love, All Kindness. And He reaches down to reveal the pages hidden to the unwise and proud.

I recognize my struggles, my failures, my inabilities, and know that I am this way, because of Sin, that entered into Man's makeup. Infecting the perfect creation and carrying the infection in each subsequent newborn. I fight the infection. I don't always have victory, because everything conspires against 'True Life' To obtain it. It is a fight to the last one till my last breathe. I would like to trample on every evil thought which satan fires. That is the fight. Against Satan, the world and the flesh that was compromised by Sin.

So, possession is many things. The Clergy don't know it well. They think with their own intelligence of what it is, and do not Ask God for Wisdom, thus they think they are 'learned' --Proud. The proud as we recall persecuted the Humble and Meek Jesus. The Proud are anyone any person, besides the Pharisees, Sadduccees, Scribes, Herodians, Romans, Rulers or Temple Priests.

Thus, Jesus says, the New Pharisees and the little apostles or the other way around, Little Apostles and the New Pharisees. The New Pharisees meaning the proud, which means any one, whether high ranking or low, whether priest or layman.

Thus, the proud persecuted Jesus' Voice in Maria Valtorta. Only those who Hear the Humble and Meek Master, Jesus Christ, and resemble Him in these attributes can read Valtorta and be happy, joyful for such a precious gift. Amen enough said.

    Peace be with you always
